Ingredients

  • 4 lb. pot roast
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 1 lb. sliced mushrooms
  • 3 sliced onions
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Brown the pot roast in oil in a Dutch oven.
  2. Add sliced mushrooms, sliced onions, salt, pepper, whole cloves, and allspice to the Dutch oven.
  3. Cover with a lid and bake in a hot oven for 1 hour with coals below and above.
  4. After 1 hour, add apple juice and turn the meat to coat.
  5. Bake for an additional 2 1/2 hours.
  6. Remove everything from the oven except the juice.
  7. Pour milk into the juice.
  8. Mix flour and water and stir into the Dutch oven.
  9. Heat to boiling for 3 to 5 minutes to thicken the gravy.
