Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sweet milk
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Heat milk and cocoa together until warm.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Combine cooled chocolate mixture with buttermilk.
  5. Sift together flour, soda, and baking powder.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk mixture, then add vanilla.
  7. Pour batter into two greased 8 or 9-inch cake pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow cakes to cool, then cover with Seven Minute Icing.
