Ingredients

  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened flaked coconut (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Lightly grease a 13 x 9 inch baking pan.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the brown sugar and flour.
  4. Use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut the softened butter or margarine into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Remove 1 cup of the mixture and set aside for topping.
  6. In the remaining mixture, add the baking powder, salt, vanilla extract, milk, and egg; mix until well combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  8. Sprinkle the reserved 1 cup of crumb mixture over the batter.
  9. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot bars.
  11. Allow the chocolate to melt, then spread evenly over the bars.
  12. Sprinkle chopped walnuts and flaked coconut (if using) on top.
  13. Let cool before cutting into bars and serving.
