Toffee Topped Bars
Decadent toffee-topped bars feature a rich brown sugar base, crunchy walnuts, and smooth chocolate topping, perfect for sweet cravings and gatherings.
Ingredients
- 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar ⓘ
- 2 cups all purpose flour ⓘ
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened ⓘ
- 1 teaspoon baking powder ⓘ
- 1/2 teaspoon salt ⓘ
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ⓘ
- 1 cup milk ⓘ
- 1 egg ⓘ
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts ⓘ
- 1/4 cup unsweetened flaked coconut (optional) ⓘ
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Lightly grease a 13 x 9 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, mix together the brown sugar and flour.
- Use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut the softened butter or margarine into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Remove 1 cup of the mixture and set aside for topping.
- In the remaining mixture, add the baking powder, salt, vanilla extract, milk, and egg; mix until well combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle the reserved 1 cup of crumb mixture over the batter.
- Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot bars.
- Allow the chocolate to melt, then spread evenly over the bars.
- Sprinkle chopped walnuts and flaked coconut (if using) on top.
- Let cool before cutting into bars and serving.
