Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1/3 cup candied fruit

Instructions

  1. Melt the shortening and let it cool.
  2. Add molasses, sugar, and egg to the cooled shortening.
  3. Beat until the mixture is well blended.
  4. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg, then add to the mixture.
  5. Mix well to combine.
  6. Finely chop the raisins, walnuts, and candied fruit.
  7. Fold the chopped fruits and nuts into the batter.
  8. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of the batter onto a baking sheet.
  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes.
