Ingredients

  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 c. cake flour
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 pkg. (1 c.) chocolate bits
  • 1 c. walnuts

Instructions

  1. Combine the chopped dates and boiling water; let cool.
  2. Stir shortening to soften, then gradually add sugar and cream until fluffy.
  3. Blend in vanilla.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Sift together the cake flour, cocoa, soda, and salt.
  6. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the cooled date mixture to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  7. Spread the batter in a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  8. Sprinkle the top with chocolate bits and walnuts.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes.
  10. Cool in the pan before serving.
