  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • powder or clove
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1/2 Tbsp. salt (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika

  • 1 tsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. In a heavy, covered saucepan, brown the stew beef very slowly in hot olive oil for 20 minutes.
  2. Add spices, including lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, powder or clove, bay leaves, salt (if using), pepper, paprika, season-all or cloves, and sugar. Cook for 2 hours.
  3. Remove bay leaves, then add diced onion and carrots.
  4. Cook until vegetables are tender. Leave the liquid as is or remove and thicken as desired.
  5. If refrigerated first, additional fat may be skimmed from the top before serving.

Tips & Substitutions

For enhanced flavor, consider marinating the stew beef in Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice for a few hours before cooking. You can substitute the stew beef with chuck roast or brisket for a different texture. If you prefer a thicker stew, add a cornstarch slurry or flour to the liquid towards the end of cooking. Adjust spices according to taste, and feel free to add other vegetables like potatoes or celery.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty beef stew with crusty bread or over a bed of rice for a filling meal. It pairs beautifully with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables to balance the richness. For a comforting twist, consider serving it alongside mashed potatoes or a side of 'Tastee Skillet Dish' for a complete experience.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover beef stew in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, warm it gently on the stove over low heat, stirring occasionally, or microwave in short intervals until heated through. If the stew thickens too much, add a splash of water or broth to reach your desired consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this stew in a slow cooker?

Absolutely! To make it in a slow cooker, brown the beef in olive oil first, then transfer it to the slow cooker along with the spices and water. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4-5 hours until tender. This method allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
