Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup salad oil
  • 2 pounds beef round in 1-inch cubes
  • 2 medium onions sliced thin
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • sprig of parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 6 to 8 bread squares spread with dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 1 cup beer
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons salad oil in a large skillet. Brown beef, a few pieces at a time, quickly and remove from pan.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons salad oil and sliced onions to the skillet. Brown the onions well.
  3. Stir in remaining ingredients, except bread squares.
  4. Mix the beef with the onion mixture in the skillet and bring to a boil.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a 2 to 2 1/2-quart casserole.
  6. Cover and bake at 325°F until the beef is tender.
