Ingredients

  • 1/4 lb butter
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped candied lemon peel
  • 1 cup seedless raisins
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and add the dark brown sugar; beat well.
  2. Add the sifted flour (reserving 2 tablespoons) and buttermilk alternately by spoonfuls, stirring steadily.
  3. Beat the mixture well to combine all ingredients.
