Braided Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 to 3 cups flour
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried finely crushed herbs (oregano, basil, parsley, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 2 ounces dried beef, chopped

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 cup of flour and the yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Heat water, 2 tablespoons of butter, sugar, and salt in a pan until lukewarm and the butter melts.
  3. Add this mixture to the flour and yeast, along with the egg.
  4. Beat at low speed for 30 seconds, scraping sides of the bowl constantly.
  5. Beat for 3 minutes at high speed.
  6. By hand, stir in all the remaining flour you can mix in with a spoon.
  7. Knead enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff, smooth, and elastic dough.
  8. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes.
