Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine, soft
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/3 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease the bottom only of an 8 x 4-inch or 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.
  3. In a large bowl, combine sugar and margarine; blend thoroughly.
  4. Add eggs; mix well.
  5. Stir in buttermilk.
  6. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off.
  7. Add flour, cocoa, baking powder, salt, and soda.
  8. Stir just until dry particles are moistened. Stir in chopped nuts.
  9. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 55 to 65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Cool in pan for 15 minutes. Remove from pan, cool completely, then slice.
