Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup chopped peanuts
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • powdered sugar icing
  • pressurized red and green decorating icing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Stir together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add chopped peanuts to the dry mixture.
  3. Mix the beaten egg and milk; stir into the dry mixture until moistened.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, pat dough into a 10 x 7-inch rectangle, 1/2-inch thick.
  5. Cut the dough crosswise into 1-inch strips. Twist each strip by holding both ends.
  6. Bend one end of each strip to form a candy cane shape.
  7. Place the shaped dough on a greased baking sheet several inches apart.
  8. Bake at 425°F for 10 minutes or until light brown.
  9. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and cool.
  10. Coat each candy cane with powdered sugar icing.
