Ingredients

  • 14 oz. caramel candies
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups quick cooking or regular oats
  • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup margarine or butter, softened
  • 6 oz. chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or dry roasted peanuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  2. Heat caramel candies and milk in a 2-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently until smooth. Remove from heat.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, and egg.
  4. Stir in softened margarine or butter with a fork until the mixture is crumbly.
  5. Press half of the crumbly mixture into the prepared pan and bake for 10 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped walnuts or peanuts.
  7. Drizzle the caramel mixture evenly over the top.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining crumbly mixture over the caramel layer.
  9. Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool before cutting into bars.
