- In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Add milk, sugar, shortening, egg, salt, and 2 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
- Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
- Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth, about 4 to 6 minutes.
- Place in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled.
- In a skillet, cook ground beef and chopped onion until done; drain.
- Stir in tomato sauce and set aside.
- Punch down dough; divide into 16 pieces.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece into a 5-inch circle.
- Place two slices of cheese and 3 tablespoons of beef mixture on each circle.
- Bring the dough over the filling to the center and pinch edges to seal.
- Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise until doubled.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
