Ingredients

  • 2 (1/4 oz.) packages active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (115°F)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (115°F)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 8 slices cheese

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. Add milk, sugar, shortening, egg, salt, and 2 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
  3. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  4. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth, about 4 to 6 minutes.
  5. Place in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled.
  6. In a skillet, cook ground beef and chopped onion until done; drain.
  7. Stir in tomato sauce and set aside.
  8. Punch down dough; divide into 16 pieces.
  9. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece into a 5-inch circle.
  10. Place two slices of cheese and 3 tablespoons of beef mixture on each circle.
  11. Bring the dough over the filling to the center and pinch edges to seal.
  12. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet.
  13. Cover and let rise until doubled.
  14. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
