Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider adding a bit of cream to the milk or using a combination of shredded cheeses like cheddar and Monterey Jack. If you prefer a bit of spice, sprinkle in some red pepper flakes or add diced jalapeños. You can also substitute the ham with cooked bacon or turkey for a different flavor profile. For a vegetarian version, replace the ham with sautéed mushrooms or spinach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use raw potatoes instead of cooked?

Using raw potatoes will require a longer cooking time, and they may not cook evenly. It's best to use pre-cooked or parboiled potatoes to ensure that everything cooks through properly in the given time frame.

What type of cheese works best for this recipe?

Cheddar cheese is a classic choice due to its melting properties and flavor, but you can experiment with other cheeses like Monterey Jack, Gruyère, or even a blend for added depth. Just ensure the cheese you choose melts well.

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the casserole ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking. Just be sure to cover it tightly. When ready to bake, allow it to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before placing it in the oven.
