Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine chopped dates, 1 teaspoon soda, and boiling water; set aside.
  3. Cream together 1 1/3 cups sugar, shortening, and eggs.
  4. Add the date mixture to the creamed mixture and mix well.
  5. Gradually add flour, 3/4 teaspoon soda, and salt to the mixture.
  6. Stir in 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped nuts.
  7. Pour the batter into a well-greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
  8. Bake for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
