Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 18 marshmallows, halved
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate bits
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Beat shortening until light.
  2. Add brown sugar and beat until fluffy.
  3. Beat in egg to blend.
  4. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa.
  5. Gradually beat flour mixture alternately with milk into creamed mixture; stir in walnuts.
  6. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough onto a lightly greased baking sheet, 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 12 to 15 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and top each with a halved marshmallow.
  9. Set the pan on a rack until cookies are cool enough to handle.
  10. Melt semi-sweet chocolate bits with butter; stir in cinnamon.
  11. Using a small spatula, swirl the chocolate mixture over the marshmallow-topped cookies to cover the marshmallows; let cool.
