Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 c. cocoa
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 c. strong cooled coffee
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Instructions

  1. Sift together all dry ingredients.
  2. Add shortening, 1/2 cup of buttermilk, and coffee.
  3. Beat for 2 minutes until well blended and glossy.
  4. Add 1/3 cup of buttermilk or sour milk, 2 eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
  5. Beat for 2 minutes until smooth.
  6. Pour into 2 lightly greased and floured 8-inch layer cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350°.
  8. Cool.
  9. Ice with Commercial Icing recipe from this book.
  10. Cover top with chocolate chips. Serve cold.
