Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla or almond extract
  • 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
  3. In a large mixer bowl, beat butter or margarine with an electric mixer on medium speed until softened, about 30 seconds.
  4. Add brown sugar and sugar, and beat until fluffy.
  5. Add egg and vanilla or almond extract, then beat well.
  6. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  7. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, beating until well mixed.
  8. Spread the batter in the greased baking pan.
  9. Sprinkle chocolate pieces evenly over the top of the batter.
  10. Place in the preheated oven and bake about 2 minutes or until the chocolate pieces soften.
  11. Remove the pan from the oven.
  12. Use a table knife to swirl the melted chocolate into the batter.
  13. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 12 to 15 minutes or until golden.
  14. Cool in the pan on a cooling rack.
  15. Cut into bars to serve.
