- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
- In a large mixer bowl, beat butter or margarine with an electric mixer on medium speed until softened, about 30 seconds.
- Add brown sugar and sugar, and beat until fluffy.
- Add egg and vanilla or almond extract, then beat well.
- In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and salt.
- With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, beating until well mixed.
- Spread the batter in the greased baking pan.
- Sprinkle chocolate pieces evenly over the top of the batter.
- Place in the preheated oven and bake about 2 minutes or until the chocolate pieces soften.
- Remove the pan from the oven.
- Use a table knife to swirl the melted chocolate into the batter.
- Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 12 to 15 minutes or until golden.
- Cool in the pan on a cooling rack.
- Cut into bars to serve.
