Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 pound dates, cut fine
  • 1 3/4 cups enriched flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 well beaten egg
  • 1 cup grated American cheese
  • 3/4 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over dates and let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Sift together the dry ingredients: flour, soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add the date mixture, well beaten egg, grated cheese, and chopped nuts to the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  5. Pour the batter into a wax paper-lined loaf pan.
  6. Bake in a moderate oven for about 50 minutes.
