- Combine chopped dates, chopped walnuts, and shortening in a mixing bowl.
- Add boiling water and cold water to the mixture.
- Stir in brown sugar, well-beaten egg, and vanilla extract.
- Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the date mixture, mixing well.
- Pour the batter into a greased large loaf pan.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until done.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
