Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb dates, chopped
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • chopped walnuts
  • semisweet chocolate bits

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over the chopped dates and let cool.
  2. Cream together the butter, sugar, and soda until well combined.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla to the creamed mixture and beat well.
  4. Mix in the flour, cocoa, and salt until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 13x9-inch pan.
  6. Sprinkle chopped walnuts and chocolate bits over the top.
  7. Bake at 350°F for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool before sprinkling with powdered sugar.
