Ingredients

  • 3 large onions, sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 cans beef broth
  • 2 cans chicken broth
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • dash pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 6 slices French bread, toasted
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Saute onions in butter until they are soft.
  2. Add boiling water, beef broth, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 1 hour.
  5. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each slice of toasted French bread.
  6. Put the bread under the broiler until the cheese melts, then place it on top of a bowl of soup.
