Ingredients

  • 5 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups sour milk
  • 2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • thick jam or jelly

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients including flour, soda, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add sugar and well-beaten eggs to the dry mixture and mix well.
  3. Stir in sour milk, vinegar, and melted butter until the batter is smooth.
  4. Roll out the dough to a 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
  5. Cut out circles from the dough and place a spoonful of jam or jelly in the center of each.
  6. Fold the dough over the filling, sealing the edges securely.
  7. Heat deep fat to 350°F (175°C) and fry the filled doughnuts until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Drain on paper towels before serving.
