Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 oz. Swiss cheese, diced
  • vegetable oil
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 Tbsp. water

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl.
  2. Stir in sugar, salt, eggs, margarine, and 2 cups of flour.
  3. Beat until smooth, then add remaining flour until dough is easy to handle.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, 1 to 2 hours.
  6. Punch down the dough, knead in the diced cheese, and divide into three equal parts.
  7. Roll each part into a 15‑inch rope.
  8. Place the ropes together on a greased cookie sheet, braid them loosely, and do not stretch.
  9. Pinch the ends together and tuck under.
  10. Brush the braid with oil.
  11. Let rise again for 40 to 50 minutes, then bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 10 minutes until golden.
  12. Serve warm as a cheese‑filled bread loaf.
