  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 oz butter
  • 1 Tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 Tbsp chopped chives
  • pinch thyme
  • pinch marjoram
  • pinch rosemary
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Put butter in a small saucepan and fry the chopped onion until golden brown.
  2. Add herbs, half the parsley, grated cheese, crumbled bread, paprika, egg, salt, and pepper to the onion and butter mixture.
  3. Season the fillets with salt and pepper, then cover half of each fillet with the mixture and fold over.
  4. Arrange the stuffed fillets in a casserole dish and sprinkle with the remaining filling.
  5. Place a few slices of lemon on each fillet, cover with a lid, and bake at gas mark 4 (350°F) for 10 minutes.
  6. Arrange sliced tomatoes around the fish and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  7. Replace used lemon slices with fresh before serving and decorate with the remaining parsley or chives.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer filling, consider adding a beaten egg to the mixture for extra binding. If you don't have plaice, any white fish fillet like cod or sole can work well. Fresh herbs can be substituted with dried, but use a smaller amount as dried herbs are more concentrated. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preference.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the stuffed fish with a side of steamed vegetables like Carrots Amandine or a fresh Orange And Lemon Salad for a refreshing contrast. A light white wine pairs beautifully with this dish, enhancing its flavors. Consider adding a dollop of Rye Dill Dip for a creamy touch.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover stuffed fish can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place it in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes or until heated through. Avoid microwave reheating as it can make the fish rubbery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prepare the stuffed fish in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the stuffed fish a few hours ahead of time. Assemble the fillets with the filling, place them in the casserole dish, and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until ready to bake. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.

What can I use instead of cheese in the filling?

If you're looking for a dairy-free option, try using nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor or replace the cheese with blended silken tofu mixed with herbs for creaminess. Alternatively, you could use a vegan cheese substitute to keep the dish plant-based.

Is it possible to freeze the stuffed fish?

Yes, you can freeze stuffed fish before baking. Wrap each fillet tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. When ready to cook, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and bake according to the recipe instructions.
