- Mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar until smooth.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and beer to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture, and blend well after each addition.
- Stir in chopped dates and walnuts.
- Pour the batter into a well-greased 12-cup fluted tube pan.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cake for 10 minutes in the pan.
- Invert onto a rack to cool completely.
- Wrap in foil and let sit for 24 hours before serving.
- Optional: sprinkle with confectioners' sugar before serving.
- Serve with Rum Butter Spread, if desired.
