Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound orange slice candy, cut into bits
  • 8 ounces pitted dates, chopped
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 3 1/2 ounces flaked coconut
  • 1 cup margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Sift together flour and salt.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine orange slice candy, chopped dates, chopped walnuts, and flaked coconut.
  4. Toss the mixture with 1/2 cup of the flour to coat evenly; set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, cream the margarine.
  6. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
  7. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  8. Combine baking soda with buttermilk.
  9. Add the buttermilk mixture alternately with the remaining flour to the egg mixture.
  10. Fold in the floured candy mixture.
  11. Spoon the batter into a greased 10-inch tube pan.
  12. Bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  13. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before glazing.
  14. Prepare the orange glaze by mixing sifted powdered sugar with orange juice.
  15. Pour the glaze over the warm cake before serving.
