Tips & Substitutions

For a thicker soup, consider adding a cornstarch slurry at the end of cooking. If you're out of beef bouillon cubes, you can substitute with homemade beef broth or low-sodium beef stock. For added flavor, try incorporating herbs like thyme or bay leaves. To make it heartier, you can throw in some potatoes or beans, similar to the ingredients found in Hearty Hamburg Soup.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Hearty Steak Soup with crusty bread or over rice for a filling meal. A sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley can brighten the dish. For a complete dinner, pair it with a simple side salad or browse more American recipes for complementary sides. This soup is also great for batch cooking and enjoying throughout the week.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, pour the soup into a saucepan and warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally. If it thickens too much, add a splash of water or beef broth to reach your desired consistency. For longer storage, freeze in portions for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different cut of beef for this recipe?

Yes, you can use other cuts like chuck or brisket, which will also become tender during the slow cooking process. Just ensure to trim any excess fat before cubing. Chuck is particularly good for soups and stews due to its rich flavor and tenderness when cooked slowly.

How can I make this soup spicier?

To add some heat, incorporate diced jalapeños or a teaspoon of red pepper flakes during cooking. You can also serve the soup with hot sauce on the side for those who prefer to add spice to their individual bowls. Experimenting with spices is a great way to personalize the flavor.

What can I add to make this soup vegetarian?

For a vegetarian version, replace the round steak with hearty vegetables like mushrooms or lentils for protein. Use vegetable broth instead of water and omit the beef bouillon cubes. The Kitchen Bouquet can still be used for color, or you can skip it to keep it plant-based.
