Ingredients

  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sage
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground chuck
  • 3 tablespoons fat
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 cup diced or chopped fresh or canned tomatoes
  • 1/8 teaspoon basil
  • pepper to taste
  • pastry for 9-inch single crust pie

Instructions

  1. Combine bread crumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, sage, and salt; mix well.
  2. Add ground beef and mix thoroughly until well blended.
  3. Form the mixture into small meatballs.
  4. Brown the meatballs on all sides in a skillet and place in a casserole dish.
  5. Drain excess fat, leaving about 3 teaspoons, then sauté chopped onion.
  6. Add applesauce, prepared horseradish, diced or chopped tomatoes, basil, salt, and pepper to the onion; cook for a few minutes.
  7. Pour the sauce over the meatballs in the casserole.
  8. Cover with pastry for a 9-inch single crust pie.
  9. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 30 to 40 minutes until golden and cooked through.
