Tips & Substitutions

For a spicier kick, consider adding more jalapenos or using pepper jack cheese instead of the regular cheese. You can substitute the bacon bits with diced ham for a different flavor. If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding a tablespoon of vinegar to regular milk and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes. Ensure to brown the cornmeal just right for added texture.

Serving Suggestions

This cornbread pairs beautifully with a side of medium thick chili or a fresh salad for a complete meal. Consider serving it with a dollop of sour cream or a drizzle of hot sauce for added flavor. You can also serve it alongside Aunt Mona's Split Pea Soup With Ham for a hearty dinner that will satisfy your guests.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover cornbread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place individual portions in the microwave for about 30 seconds or until warmed through. Alternatively, you can reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes, covered with foil to prevent drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this cornbread ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the cornbread batter a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Just be sure to mix it well before pouring it into the skillets. However, it's best to bake it fresh on the day you plan to serve for optimal texture and flavor.

What can I use instead of bacon bits?

If you're looking for a substitute for bacon bits, you can use chopped cooked turkey bacon or diced ham. For a vegetarian option, consider using smoked paprika for a similar smoky flavor without the meat.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Yes, you can freeze leftovers. Wrap individual portions tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil, or place them in an airtight freezer-safe container. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
