Ingredients

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2/3 cup boiling water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves or allspice

Instructions

  1. Put molasses, shortening, and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and pour into the bowl.
  3. Mix well and let cool.
  4. Add eggs, chopped nuts, and raisins.
  5. Mix and sift remaining dry ingredients: flour, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves or allspice.
  6. Add the sifted ingredients to the wet mixture and mix well until smooth.
  7. Pour the batter into an 8 x 8 x 2-inch cake pan.
  8. Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 50 to 60 minutes.
