A rich and tangy cheese dressing with a smooth texture, perfect for sandwiches or baked potatoes, offering bold flavors of cheddar, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 pound sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup salad oil
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, slowly heat the margarine until melted; remove from heat.
  2. Add flour, salt, white pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Stir until smooth.
  4. Gradually add milk, a small portion at a time, stirring constantly.
  5. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring continually.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer.
  7. Add 1/2 pound of grated sharp Cheddar cheese.
  8. Continue to stir and simmer until the cheese is completely melted.
  9. Remove from heat and let cool.
  10. Once cooled, add alternately portions of salad oil and cider vinegar while stirring.
  11. For added zest, include a garlic clove or 1 tablespoon of horseradish.
  12. Chill the dressing. Shake before using.
