  • 2 (15 oz.) cans pork and beans
  • 1 can kidney beans
  • 1 can baby limas or green lima beans
  • 3/4 c. ketchup
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet and drain excess fat.

  3. Cook on high for 1 hour, then reduce to low and cook for 4 to 6 hours.

Tips & Substitutions

For a smoky flavor, consider substituting the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken, or use a mix of both. If you're looking to cut back on sodium, opt for low-sodium versions of canned beans. You can also add chopped bell peppers or corn for extra texture and flavor. This dish is quite adaptable, so feel free to experiment with spices like chili powder or cumin to enhance the taste.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty dish with a side of cornbread or a simple green salad for a balanced meal. It pairs beautifully with Company Casserole(Adapted From The Brabson House) for a comforting family dinner. For added freshness, garnish with chopped green onions or parsley just before serving. This one-pot dinner is perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply microwave individual portions for 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway through, or heat on the stove over medium-low until warmed through. This dish also freezes well; just thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of beans in this recipe?

Absolutely! Feel free to substitute with your favorite beans, such as black beans or pinto beans. Just keep in mind the cooking time may vary slightly based on the type of beans you choose. Mixing different beans can also add variety in flavor and texture.

Is it possible to make this dish vegetarian?

Yes, you can easily make a vegetarian version by omitting the ground beef and bacon. Replace them with plant-based protein options like lentils or tempeh, and use vegetable oil instead of bacon drippings. You can also enhance the flavor with smoked paprika to mimic the smoky taste.

How can I adjust the sweetness of the dish?

If you prefer a less sweet flavor, you can reduce the amount of brown sugar or substitute it with a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup. Adjusting the ketchup quantity can also help balance the sweetness to your liking, making it a more savory dish.
