Ingredients

  • 5 eggs
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 c. nuts
  • 1 c. jam

Instructions

  1. Cream the sugar and butter together until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Sift the flour with salt, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.
  3. Mix the baking soda with buttermilk until dissolved.
  4. Alternately add the sifted dry ingredients and buttermilk mixture to the creamed sugar and butter, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Add the remaining ingredients except the eggs and mix well.
  6. Beat in the eggs one at a time until fully incorporated.
  7. Divide the batter evenly into three greased 8-inch layer pans.
  8. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the layers to cool before assembling and frosting as desired.
