Ingredients

  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 c. plain flour

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over the shortening.
  2. Add sugar, molasses, and beaten eggs to the mixture.
  3. Sift together the dry ingredients and add them to the wet mixture, beating until smooth.
  4. Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes. Serve with applesauce if desired.
