Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1-1/2 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 medium tomatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 6 slices American cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the beaten egg and milk.
  2. Stir in soft bread crumbs, chopped onion, 1-1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Add ground beef and mix well.
  3. Pat the meat mixture into an 8 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish.
  4. Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 minutes.
  5. Drain off excess fat.
  6. Arrange peeled and sliced tomato rounds on top of the partially baked meat loaf.
  7. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper.
  8. Cover with slices of American cheese.
  9. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form; set aside.
  10. In a small bowl, combine sour cream, flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and a dash of pepper.
  11. Add egg yolks and beat until smooth.
  12. Fold in the beaten egg whites into the yolk mixture.
  13. Pour the egg mixture over the cheese-covered meat.
  14. Return to the oven and bake about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  15. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting.
