Meatloaf Puff
A savory meatloaf topped with fresh tomatoes and melted American cheese, finished with a creamy egg topping—perfect for comforting family dinners or casual gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 egg, beaten ⓘ
- 3/4 cup milk ⓘ
- 1-1/2 cups soft bread crumbs ⓘ
- 1/2 cup onion, chopped ⓘ
- 1-1/2 teaspoons salt ⓘ
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper ⓘ
- 1-1/2 pounds ground beef ⓘ
- 2 medium tomatoes, peeled and sliced ⓘ
- 6 slices American cheese ⓘ
- 1 cup sour cream ⓘ
- 3 egg whites ⓘ
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour ⓘ
- 1/2 teaspoon salt ⓘ
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the beaten egg and milk.
- Stir in soft bread crumbs, chopped onion, 1-1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Add ground beef and mix well.
- Pat the meat mixture into an 8 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish.
- Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 minutes.
- Drain off excess fat.
- Arrange peeled and sliced tomato rounds on top of the partially baked meat loaf.
- Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper.
- Cover with slices of American cheese.
- Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form; set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine sour cream, flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and a dash of pepper.
- Add egg yolks and beat until smooth.
- Fold in the beaten egg whites into the yolk mixture.
- Pour the egg mixture over the cheese-covered meat.
- Return to the oven and bake about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let stand 5 minutes before cutting.
