Ingredients

  • 1 pkg frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 2 cups liquid from vegetables
  • 2 cups half and half
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Steam the frozen mixed vegetables in a covered pan using 1/4 cup water until tender, then drain and save the liquid for the sauce.
  2. Add salt, garlic salt, and 2 tablespoons of butter to the vegetables, mixing gently. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Mornay sauce by melting 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan, then stirring in 1/3 cup flour to form a roux.
  4. Gradually add 2 cups of the vegetable cooking liquid to the roux, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  5. Stir in 2 cups of half and half, Parmesan cheese, nutmeg, thyme, garlic salt, and salt. Cook until the sauce thickens.
  6. Spread half of the cooked vegetables in a casserole dish, then pour half of the sauce over them.
  7. Add the remaining vegetables and top with the remaining sauce.
  8. Sprinkle bread crumbs over the top and drizzle with 1/4 stick melted butter.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
