Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and shortening.
  2. Add molasses, egg, cloves, cinnamon, and flour; mix well.
  3. Dissolve baking soda in lukewarm water and add to the mixture.
  4. Stir in raisins, coconut, or currants.
  5. Spread the batter on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 15 minutes.
