Ingredients

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup boiling hot water
  • 1/2 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream together molasses, sugar, and shortening.
  2. Add eggs to the creamed mixture and mix well.
  3. Sift flour, cinnamon, ginger, and salt together.
  4. Dissolve baking soda in boiling hot water.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the hot water mixture.
  6. Stir in raisins.
  7. Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool before serving and top with whipped cream.
