Ingredients

  • 4 lb. cut up ribs or country style ribs
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 c. ketchup
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. cider vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. prepared mustard
  • dash of garlic
  • 1 c. ginger ale
  • 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. red pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preboil spareribs about 30 minutes, being careful not to overcook.
  2. Drain the ribs and let them cool.
  3. Line a large baking dish or roaster with sliced onions.
  4. Combine ketchup, brown sugar, cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, prepared mustard, garlic, ginger ale, chili powder, and red pepper (if using) to make the sauce.
  5. Pour the sauce over the cooled ribs in the prepared dish.
  6. Refrigerate the ribs overnight.
  7. Bake uncovered at 325°F for 1 hour or more until heated through and tender.

Tips & Substitutions

For best results, marinate the ribs in the sauce overnight to enhance flavor. If you're short on time, you can skip preboiling the ribs, but it helps tenderize them. Consider using a sugar substitute if you're watching your sugar intake, or try honey for a natural alternative. Adding a splash of apple juice to the sauce can also intensify the flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the ribs with classic sides like coleslaw or cornbread for a complete meal. They also pair beautifully with Ms. Diane'S Pickles for a tangy contrast. For a refreshing drink, consider serving them alongside a Cranberry Quencher. These ribs make a great centerpiece for a casual gathering or family BBQ.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover ribs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 20-30 minutes until warmed through. You can also microwave them, but be sure to cover to retain moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of ribs for this recipe?

Yes, you can use baby back ribs or spare ribs instead of country-style ribs. Just adjust the cooking time as needed, as different cuts may require longer or shorter baking times to become tender.

Is it necessary to preboil the ribs?

Preboiling helps to tenderize the ribs and reduces cooking time in the oven. However, if you prefer a different method, you can skip this step and just bake them longer to achieve tenderness. Keep an eye on them to avoid drying out.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the ribs and sauce ahead of time and refrigerate them overnight. This not only saves time but also allows the flavors to meld, making for a more delicious dish when you finally bake them.
