Ingredients

  • 2 cups light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 cups sifted plain flour
  • 3 heaping tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Warm the buttermilk and shortening in separate bowls.
  2. Sift the plain flour and set aside.
  3. Sift together the light brown sugar, soda, and cocoa powder.
  4. Add eggs to the mixture and beat well.
  5. Alternate adding the liquid mixture and dry ingredients to form the batter.
