Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup soft bread crumbs
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1/4 tsp. basil
  • 1/2 cup prepared sauce
  • slices of Mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped onion, tomato paste, and water; simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt, oregano, basil, and 1/2 cup prepared sauce.
  3. Form the meat mixture into a free-standing loaf and place in a shallow baking dish.
  4. Bake at 375°F for 50 minutes.
  5. Pour remaining sauce over the loaf.
  6. Arrange sliced Mozzarella cheese on top.
  7. Bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
