Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates or raisins, chopped
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 9 ounces chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped dates or raisins, boiling water, and soda; let stand until cool.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar together.
  3. Add eggs and beat well.
  4. Gradually add flour, salt, and cream of tartar; stir until well blended.
  5. Stir in the cooled date mixture.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  7. Sprinkle chocolate chips and chopped nuts over the top of the batter.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool before serving.
