Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Combine brown sugar, margarine, water, raisins, cinnamon, and ground cloves in a saucepan.
  2. Heat until boiling, then simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  3. Dissolve baking soda in 2 teaspoons hot water and add to the cooled mixture.
  4. Stir in flour and baking powder until well blended.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 8 x 12 inch baking pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes.
  7. Ice the cooled cake with Penuche Icing.
