Ingredients

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Pour the boiling water over the chopped dates and baking soda, then let stand.
  2. Mix together the sugar, butter, eggs, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add the soaked dates and soda mixture to the creamed ingredients.
  4. Beat in the flour and chopped walnuts until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 9x13-inch pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes, or until done to the touch.
