Tips & Substitutions

For an extra kick, consider adding diced green chiles or using spicy mayonnaise. If avocados are hard, place them in a paper bag for a day or so to ripen. You can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream or use a vegan mayonnaise for a healthier twist. This dip can be customized with your favorite ingredients from other Mexican recipes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this dip with Doritos or Fritos for a crunchy contrast. It pairs beautifully with Simple 7-Layer Dip for a party platter. You can also add fresh salsa or guacamole on the side for an extra layer of flavor. Pair with cold drinks like margaritas or iced tea for a perfect gathering.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To prevent browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the dip before sealing. Reheat the bean layer in the microwave if desired, but avoid reheating the avocado and sour cream layers as they are best served cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the bean layer and avocado mixture a day in advance. Layer the dip just before serving to keep the avocado from browning. Store each layer separately in the refrigerator and assemble when ready to serve.

What can I use instead of refried beans?

If you want a healthier option, try using black beans or pinto beans that you mash yourself. You can also use hummus for a different flavor profile. This will still provide a creamy base without the added fat of refried beans.

Is this dip suitable for vegetarians?

Absolutely! All the ingredients in this dip are vegetarian-friendly. If you're looking for vegan options, simply substitute the mayonnaise and sour cream with plant-based alternatives to make a delicious vegetarian dip.
