Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider marinating the beef in Burgundy wine overnight before cooking. If you prefer a thicker sauce, increase the flour to 4 tablespoons. You can substitute the Burgundy wine with any dry red wine or beef broth if needed. Add some chopped fresh parsley for garnish before serving for a pop of color and freshness.

Serving Suggestions

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm the stew on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of beef broth or water if the sauce is too thick. This dish also freezes well for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different cut of beef for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute with other cuts like beef chuck or brisket. These cuts are ideal for slow cooking and will become tender and flavorful as they simmer. Just ensure the meat is well-trimmed and cut into uniform pieces for even cooking.

How can I make this dish vegetarian?

To make a vegetarian version, replace the beef with hearty vegetables like mushrooms, eggplant, or seitan. Use vegetable broth instead of beef broth, and skip the bacon. You can add smoked paprika for a depth of flavor that mimics the smokiness of bacon.

Is there a way to speed up the cooking time?

If you're short on time, you can use a pressure cooker to significantly reduce cooking time. Cook on high pressure for about 40 minutes, allowing for a natural release afterward. This method will still yield tender beef and rich flavors, but be careful not to overcook the vegetables.
