Stuffed Cabbage, Polish Style

Polish-style stuffed cabbage features tender leaves filled with savory meat and rice, simmered in a flavorful tomato sauce—comforting and hearty, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 4 lb. head cabbage
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground pork
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 c. instant rice
  • 1/2 c. cooked rice
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Remove the core of the cabbage and place the whole head in a large pot of boiling salted water.
  2. Cover and cook for approximately 5 minutes or until the outer leaves are soft enough to remove.
  3. Remove the outer leaves and cut out the thick center stems from each leaf.
  4. Sauté the chopped onion in oil until translucent.
  5. Cook the rice until tender.
  6. Mix the ground beef, ground pork, sautéed onions, cooked rice, salt, pepper, and beaten egg in a large bowl.
  7. Place about 2 teaspoons of the meat mixture on each cabbage leaf and roll tightly.
  8. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls in a large pot.
  9. Chop any leftover cabbage and layer it on top of the rolls.
  10. Pour the can of tomato soup mixed with half a can of water over the rolls and cabbage.
  11. Cover and bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
