  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp. sage
  • 1 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. marjoram
  • 2 to 2 1/2 c. chicken broth

  2. Pour the sautéed mixture over bread cubes in a very large mixing bowl.
  3. Add all seasonings and toss well to combine.
  4. Pour in enough chicken broth to moisten the bread cubes.

  7. Cover and cook on high for 4 to 5 hours, then reduce to low for an additional 4 to 8 hours.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using butter instead of margarine. You can also substitute half of the bread cubes with cornbread for a different texture. If you don't have poultry seasoning, a combination of sage and thyme can work well. Adding diced apples or walnuts can enhance the stuffing's flavor and texture.

Serving Suggestions

This stuffing pairs beautifully with roasted meats like turkey or chicken, making it a perfect side for holiday meals. Serve alongside green beans or cranberry sauce for contrast. For a complete meal, try serving it with Chicken Divan Soup for a cozy family night.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, place the stuffing in a baking dish and cover with foil, then bake at 350°F until heated through, about 20-25 minutes. You can also reheat in the microwave, stirring occasionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this stuffing ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the stuffing a day in advance. Assemble all the ingredients and store them in the refrigerator. On the day of serving, simply pack it into the crock-pot and cook as directed.

What type of bread works best for stuffing?

Stale bread is ideal for stuffing as it absorbs moisture without becoming mushy. You can use any bread you prefer, such as sourdough, whole wheat, or even gluten-free bread for a variation.

Can I add meat to this stuffing recipe?

Absolutely! Adding cooked sausage or diced turkey can enhance the flavor and make the stuffing more substantial. Just be sure to adjust the seasoning and broth accordingly.
