Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cups sifted flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup nuts
  • 1/2 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs until well blended.
  2. Sift together the flour, soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients, mixing after each addition.
  4. Beat the mixture for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  5. Fold in nuts and raisins evenly into the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
